DEAD MEN READ NO BOOKS

This is a freestanding work which was exhibited at the 21st Sao Paulo Biennial, in Sept-Dec, 1991, and in a solo exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans,  Feb-April, 1992. It is derived from wooden machinery designs in the Encyclopédie, and made of oak using 18th century construction techniques. The work includes a new encyclopedia. The wax spheres contain human skulls, visible in x-rays. Related works include a series of collages, and a memento mori painted by my ancestor.
